Always a Princess continued her roll at the Santa Anita winter meet, cruising to a 3 1/2-length victory in the $150,000 La Canada S. (G2) on Feb. 13. The 4-year-old daughter of Lesroidesanimaux took the Grade 2 El Encino S. last month. Leroidesanimaux is currently among Florida's top 10 sires of 2011.
Once again the Arnold Zetcher homebred had to face last year 3-year-old champion Blind Luck, and she was up to the task yet again. In a compact field of four, Always a Princess was allowed to set a relaxed pace, and she basically had things her way for the entire nine furlongs. Harmonious tried to mount a challenge on the second turn, and Blind Luck came from last in the stretch, but neither seriously threatened, and Always a Princess powered home 3 1/4-lengths to the good.
"Martin's (winning jockey Martin Garcia) very good at getting a speed horse on the lead and putting them to sleep," Baffert said afterward. "Martin works hard. He deserves the win. This filly is quicker than all these horses, and if she gets the right pace, she’ll just keep going."
"I just let her break by herself and tried to get along with her," Garcia said. "When I asked her, she just took off."
Baffert said Always a Princess will be pointed to the $300,000 Santa Margarita S. (G1), also at 1 1/8 miles, on March 12.
Out of the Ashkalani mare Gabriellina Giof (GB), the Kentucky-bred Always a Princess has a record of 5-1-1 and earnings of $516,048 in nine starts. Always a Princess is a half-sister to Gabby's Golden Gal, winner of both the Acorn (G1) and Santa Monica H. (G1).
