Grade 1 winner Ariege, a daughter of Stonewall Stallions’ Doneraile Court, returned from a four-month layoff and showed why she is one of the top 3-year-old fillies in the land, storming home to an easy victory in the $102,500 Madam Jumel Stakes on August 10th over the Saratoga turf course.
The win marked her third straight against top stakes company, as Ariege captured the Santa Anita Oaks (G1) and Beaumont S. (G2) over synthetic surfaces earlier this spring before a minor setback forced her to miss the Kentucky Oaks.
Ariege defeated an overmatched group of 3-year-old fillies in the Madam Jumel by a decisive 2 ¼ lengths under rider Alan Garcia, who was riding her for the first time. The final time over a course listed as yielding was 1:38.87, and Ariege earned a 90 Beyer Speed Figure for her comeback effort.
Out of the mare Kostroma, a multiple Grade 1-winning millionaire on turf by Caerleon, Ariege moved her record to 8-4-1-1 with earnings of $447,328 for owner IEAH Stables and Pegasus Holdings Group Stables LLC. She was acquired privately as a 2-year-old after starting her career in Europe, where she won her debut by seven lengths. Moved to the states for a 3-year-old campaign, Ariege went to her current conditioner - Hall of Fame trainer Bobby Frankel. The versatile filly has won stakes events sprinting and routing, as well as on both synthetic surface and turf.
The legendary Calumet Farm bred Ariege in Kentucky.
