Stonewall Farm Stallions’
Doneraile Court got his second Grade 1 winner of 2008 when his star filly Cocoa Beach (Chi) bested champion Ginger Punch by a half-length in the $600,000 Beldame (G1) on Sept. 27th at Belmont Park.
The 1 1/8-mile race – a Breeders’ Cup “Win And You’re In” event – was contested over a sloppy Belmont track, and Cocoa Beach, a Chilean and UAE Champion in her own right, rallied impressively in the stretch to run past Ginger Punch and capture her first Grade 1 win. The final time was 1:49.50.
Cocoa Beach, a southern hemisphere 3-year-old, will likely accept her automatic berth in next month’s $2 million Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic (G1) at Santa Anita – where a win could earn her championship honors in North America. Campaigned by Godolphin Racing, Cocoa Beach improved her stellar record to eight wins from 10 starts with earnings of $950,831.
