National Contender, a 3-year-old by Strong Contender, came from dead last in a field of eight racing a mile and 70 yards, made a powerful run into the stretch and won going away on Nov. 5. The Kentucky-bred gelding, sent away at 3/5, was in hand by nearly seven lengths at the finish.
