La Reine Lionne fell a nose short in a heart-breaking three-horse photo in the Gr. III Marshua's River Stakes on the Gulfstream Park grass on Jan. 7. With top rider John Velazquez in the saddle, the 5-year-old daughter of Leroirdesanimaux charged down the stretch on the inside in the $100,000 race at a mile and a sixteenth, and it took the photo finish camera to separate her from winner Heavenly Landing. It was another nose back to third-place Tapitsfly.
La Reine Lionne earned $20,000 for the runner-up finish, and has now banked $164,092 on a record of 6-2-1 in 13 starts. In her only other stakes try, the Kentucky-bred filly finished third in the Gr. III Violet at Monmouth Park in May.
