In just his third career start, and at odds of 63-1, 2-year-old Magical Season rallied from mid-pack and nearly caught even-money favorite Lemon Juice in the $53,500 Laurel Futurity at Laurel Park on Oct. 8. Lemon Juice, a son of Johannesburg who hasn't been worse than third in seven starts, had captured the Charles Town Juvenile in his previous try.
Magical Season, a gray or roan gelding, raced wide early before uncorking his late run in the 6 1/2-furlong turf race, and missed nailing Lemon Juice by half a length at the wire, collecting $10,000 as runner-up. Magical Season had broken his maiden with a similar late run in his career debut on the grass at Colonial Downs in late July.
