Under a heads-up ride by Jose Lezcano, Red Leader came from off the pace in a $42,000 starter handicap over the Belmont Park turf course on Oct. 7 and was up in time to score by a neck. The 5-year-old hickory horse was clocked in 1:44.21 for the mile and one-sixteenth and collected a check of $25,200 for owners Steven Speranza and Robert Joscelyn.
It was the third victory of the year for Red Leader, a son of Greatness who now sports an enviable record of 5-9-7 in 33 career tries with earnings of $314,670.
