After breaking her maiden in her 6 1/2-furlong career debut over the main track at Hollywood Park on Dec. 8, Swirls came back on Jan. 5 and wasted no time in adding new dimensions to her repertoire. The 4-year-old daughter of Leroidesanimaux went wire-to-wire in a devastating performance in a $31,050 starter allowance at one mile over the Santa Anita turf course.
With David Flores in the irons, Swirls sprinted away from the field and held a 2 1/2-length advantage after a quarter. She increased the lead to 3 1/2 lengths after a half in :45.89, and to six lengths after three-quarters in 1:09.36. Flores then eased Swirls to the finish line 3 1/4 lengths ahead of even-money favorite Last Sting, with a final clocking of 1:34.61. The promising Florida-bred filly has earned $33,000 in her two starts.
