March 6 a big day for Value Plus

Value Plus offspring had a big impact on the Mar. 6 racing scene, led by the emergence of a pair of graded stakes horses. All Due Respect, a 3-year-old filly, turned in a game runner-up finish in the $250,000 Santa Anita Oaks (G1) in California, while across the country in Florida Our Champion, a 3-year-old colt, rallied for third in the Palm Beach S. (G3) at Gulfstream.

All Due Respect came into the Oaks off a romping 7 1/2-length maiden win at Fair Grounds on Jan. 24. Despite getting the services of leading rider Garrett Gomez in the Oaks, All Due Respect was sent off at nearly 7-1 because of the presence of heavy favorite Blind Luck.

Sent right to the front from the outset by Gomez, All Due Respect maintained a one-length lead for most of the 1 1/16-mile race until confronted eventual winner Crisp in the upper stretch. All Due Respect dug in gamely in a duel to the wire, finishing just a neck back of the winner. Blind Luck was another neck back in third.

The strong finish further strengthened All Due Respect's ranking among the 3-year-old fillies on the road to the Apr. 30 Kentucky Oaks (G1) at Churchill Downs. She was third in last year's Pocahontas (G3) at the Louisville track.

She earned $50,000 in the Santa Anita Oaks for owners Al and Saundra Kirkwood. Her career record now stands at 1-3-1 from six starts, with $135,032 in total earnings. She is trained by Kathy Walsh.

Our Champion has been knocking on the door in stakes company all winter in Florida, and Saturday he again put in a strong rally to be third in the $150,000 Palm Beach S. (G3) on turf.

A $73,000 yearling purchase, Our Champion now owns two wins with earnings of $49,345 for trainer David Braddy and owner Michael Sucher.

Value Plus also picked up another winner and another impressive maiden special weight performer. Naughty Bits became her sire's latest winner at Turfway, while Whateverittakes ran second in a $49,000 maiden special at Aqueduct.

Naughty Bits, another 3-year-old filly from Value Plus's first crop, won the 5 1/2-furlong race by a comfortable 2 1/4 lengths.

Trained by Ed Frederick for owner/breeder Oak Haven Farm, the gray or roan filly is the first foal out of her dam Bergen, by Deputy Commander.
