Well Spelled became the fourth winner from the five runners in Spellbinder's first crop who raced as 2-year-olds when he broke his maiden at Aqueduct on Jan. 27. The 3-year-old colt had finished second in his three starts at Monmouth Park during the summer and was coming in off a four-month layoff.
Well Spelled, under Pablo Fragoso, excelled despite fog and a sloppy track to win the $60,000, six-furlong maiden special by a head with a relentless drive through the stretch after being forced four wide on the final turn. The $36,000 check lifted the Kentucky-bred's bank account to $62,000.
