A. P. WARRIOR Pedigree Analysis by Alan Porter

A. P. Warrior is an A.P. Indy son, out of a sprint Champion. Bred on an identical cross to the sensational young sire, Bernardini, he is from the immediate family of Storm Bird. A brilliant two-year-old maiden winner over 5½ furlongs, A. P. Warrior was a graded stakes performer at two and three, and a grade two winner on dirt and turf.

From only two crops to run, A. P. Warrior is already sire of three stakes winners, including the spectacular Hutcheson Stakes (gr. II) winner, Thunder Moccasin. As mentioned, A. P. Warrior is a from the immediate family of Storm Bird, his third dam being a stakes winning three-parts-sister to that horse. We can note that, three of A. P. Warrior’s first four stakes horses have Storm Bird in their pedigree, and the similarly-bred Bernardini has a grade one winner out of a Stom Bird mare. This particularly suggests trying mares from the male-line of Storm Cat (the broodmare sire of Thunder Moccasin), and particularly interesting sources include Stormy Atlantic, Stormin Fever, Tale of the Cat, Storm Boot, Storm Creek, Sea of Secrets, Forest Wildcat (broodmare sire of a stakes performer by A. P. Warrior, and available through D’Wildcat or Wildcat Heir) and Forestry, as well as Giant’s Causeway, Hennessy and his son Johannesburg, Harlan’s Holiday, Bernstein, Mountain Cat, Tabasco Cat, Sir Cat (broodmare sire of an A.P. Indy line Champion Two-Year-Old), Freud, High Yield (broodmare sire of A. P. Warrior stakes winner Faisca), Tactical Cat and Tabasco Cat.  Other sons of Storm Bird include Summer Squall (sire of Charismatic, and giving inbreeding to the dam of Seattle Slew), Personal Hope, Hermitage, and Ocean Crest.

Bernardini is sire of a graded stakes winner out of a mare by Nijinsky II, a horse closely related to Storm Bird, and he could be brought in through Royal Academy, Seattle Dancer (giving inbreeding to the dam of Seattle Slew), Sky Classic, Sword Dance, Baldski, Strawberry Road, Shadeed and his son Alydeed, and Green Dancer, and his son Greinton. Nijinsky II is three-parts-brother to The Minstrel (sire of the granddam of an A. P. Warrior stakes winner) and Far North. Bernardini has sired a grade one winner out of a mare by Deputy Minister, and a stakes winner out of a mare by that horse’s son, Dehere, and that strain could also be brought in through Silver Deputy, Awesome Again, Touch Gold, Salt Lake, French Deputy, Forest Camp, Graeme Hall and Deputy Commander. Other branches of Northern Dancer that might be tried here include Danzig (among suitable sources being Belong to Me, Langfuhr, Boundary, Chief’s Crown, Concerto, Danzig Connection, Exchage Rate, Honor Grades – giving inbreeding to the dam of A.P. Indy – Lost Soldier, War Front, War Chant, Pine Bluff, Danzig Connection and Katowice) and Nureyev, including through Theatrical (and his son, Noactor), Zilzal and Atticus. A. P. Warrior might also work well with the Sadler’s Wells branch of Northern Dancer through El Prado (sire of Medaglia d’Oro, Kitten’s Joy and Artie Schiller).

A. P. Warrior is out of a mare inbred to Mr. Prospector, but he has already sired stakes winner Battle of Love out of a mare by Unbridled’s Song, from the same Fappiano branch of Mr. Prospector as A. P. Warrior’s broodmare sire, Quiet American. Unbridled’s Song is sire of Buddha (who brings in Storm Bird), Even the Score, Eurosilver, Rockport Harbor, Songandaprayer, and Werblin. Bernardini has a 2012 graded stakes winner out of a mare by Fappiano son Cryptoclearance (sire of Victory Gallop, grandsire of Candy Ride), and other good sources of Fappiano here would be Rubiano, Unbridled (who can be brought in through Empire Maker, Broken Vow, Grindstone, Birdstone, Red Bullet, Drewman, Spanish Steps and Untuttable), Pentelicus, Cahill Road, and Tasso.

Benardini has done well with several other branches of Mr. Prospector, getting a grade one winner and a grade two winner out of mares by Carson City (sire of City Zip, Lord Carson, Good and Tough, Cuvee, Pollard’s Vison, Five Star Day, and Hear No Evil), a two-year-old graded stakes winner out of mare by Kingmambo (sire of Lemon Drop Kid, who gives A.P. Indy and a three-parts-sister), and stake winners out of mares by  Seeking the Gold (sire of Mutakddim, Petionville, and Cape Town) and Gone West (sire of Elusive Quality, Mr. Greeley, Grand Slam, Proud Citizen and Zamindar). Alydar, another son of Mr. Prospector’s sire, Raise a Native, should also work well here.

A.  P. Warrior’s broodmare sire is inbred to Dr. Fager, which should encourage introducing in the In Reality strain. This could be tried through sons of Valid Appeal (such as Valid Wager, Valid Expectations, Successful Appeal and Mister Jolie), or via the Relaunch line, including through Honour and Glory (who looks particularly appealing, and is sire of Put It Back), Skywalker, Bertrando, Officer, Cee’s Tizzy, Tiznow and Slew Gin Fizz. Dr. Fager’s close relative Great Above could also do well here, and can be found through Holy Bull (sire of Macho Uno) and Housebuster (by  Mt. Livermore, who could also be good here, as might his son, Orientate).
