Da Stoops Pedigree Analysis by Alan Porter
Alan Porter - "A son of Distorted Humor – now recognized as one of the world’s leading sires – Da Stoops showed brilliant speed at two and three. A stakes winner by 8¾ lengths as a juvenile, while running seven furlongs in 1:21.0, Da Stoops captured three more stakes at three, and set such fractions as :21.1; :43.2; :55.2; and 1:08.3.
Da Stoops is a product of the Mr. Prospector/Northern Dancer cross, as is Distorted Humor himself, and other leading sires Kingmambo, Elusive Quality, Thunder Gulch, Fusaichi Pegasus, Grand Slam and Smoke Glacken.
Distorted Humor has quickly proved to be very effective with mares from the Seattle Slew branch of the Bold Ruler line. This cross has supplied four stakes winners, including Champion Funny Cide. Seattle Slew line stallions such as A.P. Indy, Slew o’ Gold, Fast Play and Slewacide, who have Buckpasser in the dam should be particularly good. Distorted Humor also has stakes winners from the Dewan and Chieftain branches of the Bold Ruler line, and Da Stoops should also like Bold Ruler through such as Secretariat, Bold Bidder, What a Pleasure and Raja Baba (particularly through Is It True and his son, Yes It’s True, and through Well Decorated and sons Notebook and Formal Dinner). Distorted Humor also has a stakes winner out of a mare descending from Bold Ruler’s sire, Nasrullah, via Naskra (out of mare by Star de Naskra), and from the Blushing Groom, branch of the Nasrullah line, Distorted Humor has a graded stakes winner out of a mare by Mt. Livermore (sire of Housebuster). Blushing Groom through Cherokee Run might also be interesting here.
Distorted Humor is a son of Forty Niner, and stallions from that line have done well with mares from a wide variety of branches of the Turn-to sire line. Among the most likely here are Cox’s Ridge (whose son, Vanlandingham, is broodmare sire of stakes winner by Distorted Humor), Roberto, Stop the Music, Halo and Sir Gaylord.
The cross of Forty Niner with mares from the Damascus line has been a good one, and Distorted Humor has sired two stakes winners out of mares by Personal Flag, a son of Private Account.
The cross of Forty Niner over In Reality line mares has done well, including for Distorted Humor, who already has stakes winners from both the Valid Appeal and Relaunch branches of that line. We can also note that Distorted Humor also has a stakes winner out of a mare by Olden Times, who is from the same male line as In Reality.
Forty Niner is out of a mare by Tom Rolfe, a son of Ribot. Forty Nine did well with mares which gave inbreeding to Ribot, and Distorted Humor has a grade one winner out of a mare by Alleged, a son of Hoist the Flag and a grandson of Tom Rolfe. Ribot could also be brought in through Graustark and His Majesty, with His Majesty’s son, Pleasant Colony, being a particularly promising source. Tom Rolfe is from the immediate family of Ack Ack and his son, Broad Brush (out of a mare by Hoist the Flag) might doe well. Distorted Humor already has two stakes winners out of mares by Home at Last (dam by Ack Ack) and another out of a mare by Lost Code (a Ribot line stallion out of an Ack Ack mare).
Distorted Humor is a Raise a Native line stallion, but he has three stakes winners out of mares descending in male line from Raise a Native’s son, Alydar (a genetic relative to Mr. Prospector) and Forty Niner sired a grade one winner out of a mare by Majestic Light (a product of a similar Raise a Native/Ribot cross to Forty Niner), while Distorted Humor also has a stakes winner out of a mare by that horse.
Distorted Humor is a Mr. Prospector line stallion, and we can note that he has sired three stakes winners – including grade one winner Flower Alley and grade two winner Sharp Humor – out of Mr. Prospector line mares. Distorted Humor’s stakes winners on this cross are out of mares by Lycius, Hansel (by Woodman) Conquistador Cielo, and it should also pay to look particularly for mares bred on the Mr. Prospector/Northern Dancer cross, or mares by stallions bred on that cross, as mares from the Fappiano line and mares desceding from Seeking the God.
Da Stoops has two crosses of Northern Dancer, but they will be in the fifth generation of his offspring and there are numerous major stakes winners with three crosses of Northern Dancer at similar removes. Distorted Humor has stakes winners out of mares descending in male line from Northern Dancer through Storm Bird (sire of Storm Cat and Summer Squall), Dixieland Band, Hero’s Honor, Nuryev and Sovereign Dancer. Other Northern Dancer sources which should be good include Vice Regent/Deputy Minister, Nijinsky II, Sadler’s Wells, Lyphard, Danzig, L’Enjoleur and Topsider. We can also note that there is a Distorted Humor stakes winner out of mare by a grandson of Distorted Humor’s own broodmare, Danzig. The Neartic line through Clever Trick and Phone Trick (broodmare sire of a stakes winner by Distorted Humor) should also be good.
There is a stakes winner by Distorted Humor out of mare by a Buckaroo, a son of Buckpasser, and any strains of Buckpasser, particularly Buckpasser/Northern Dancer crosses, such as Norcliffe and Bucksplasher should be good. Distorted Humor also has a grade one winner out of a mare by Pass the Tab (by Al Hattab) and a graded stakes winner out of mare by Home At Last (by Quadratic, by Quadrangle), who go respectively go back to Mahmoud through the three-parts brothers Cohoes and The Axe II."
“Da Stoops has the speed, the conformation and the pedigree, for me the three ingredients that make a stallion. But his best attribute is his athleticism, he’s got all the right parts and uses them very well.”
