General Quarters Pedigree Analysis by Alan Porter

Alan Porter - "General Quarters is an extremely versatile multiple grade one winning millionaire. A stakes performing two-year-old, who scored over 4½ furlongs on his debut, General Quarters won or placed in nine stakes events, winning three graded contests, including Blue Grass Stakes (gr. I) and Turf Classic Stakes (gr. I). The leading earner by A.P. Indy’s two-year-old grade one winning grandson, Sky Mesa, General Quarters is out of an Unbridled’s Song mare from the family of leading sires Miswaki and Southern Halo (sire of More Than Ready). He is bred on the same Pulpit/Unbridled cross as stallion phenomenon, Tapit, and a similar A.P. Indy/Fappiano cross as Bernardini.

Sky Mesa has proved very successful over mares from the Mr. Prospector line, this cross providing him with nine stakes winners to date. General Quarters is out of a mare from the Fappanio/Unbridled branch of Mr. Prospector, but that would not prevent breeding General Quarters back to mares from certain branches of the Fappiano line, among them Quiet American (broodmare sire of a stakes winner by Sky Mesa), Cryptoclearance (grandsire of Candy Ride), Empire Maker, Broken Vow, Pentelicus and Cahill Road, and Grindstone and Birdstone. Other branches of Mr. Prospector that have produced stakes winners for Sky Mesa include Carson City (sire of City Zip, Lord Carson, Good and Tough, Cuvee, Pollard’s Vison, Five Star Day, and Hear No Evil), Forty Niner (sire of Distorted Humor – who would be particularly interesting here – Tactical Advantage, End Sweep, Roar, Jules, Coronado’s Quest and Twining), Gulch (sire of Thunder Gulch), Distinctive Pro and Woodman. Pulpit and his sons have also worked with Mr. Prospector through Grand Slam and Conquistador Cielo (sire of Marquetry, and grandsire of Artax, who might be a good fit here). Miswaki (sire of Black Tie Affair), is a Mr. Prospector son from the family of General Quarters.

Other Mr. Prospector strains that have worked with the A.P. Indy line include Seeking the Gold (sire of Mutakddim, Petionville and Cape Town), Kingmambo (sire of Lemon Drop Kid out of a three-parts-sister to A.P. Indy), Machiavellian (sire of Street Cry), Afleet (sire of Northern Afleet, and grandsire of Afleet Alex), Silver Ghost, and Two Punch (sire of Smoke Glacken). Alydar, another son of Mr. Prospector’s sire, Raise a Native, should also work well (there is a grade one winner by Pulpit out of a mare by Easy Goer, a son of Alydar).

Out of mares from the Northern Dancer line, Sky Mesa has done his best work with Deputy Minster, getting a graded stakes winner out of a mare by that horse, and two stakes winners out of mares by his son, Silver Deputy (sire of Posse). Consider also introducing Deputy Minister through Awesome Again and Dehere (both broodmare sires of A.P. Indy line stakes winners), as well as French Deputy, Touch Gold, Salt Lake, Forest Camp and Graeme Hall. Sky Mesa is out of a mare by Storm Cat, but is sire of a stakes winner out of a mare by the Storm Cat son, Tabasco Cat. Other strains of Storm Cat that might be particularly intriguing here include Stormy Atlantic, Stormin Fever, Bernstein (a brother to the dam of Sky Mesa), Tale of the Cat (out of a sister to the dam of Pulpit), Hennessy and his son, Johannesburg, Tactical Cat, Forest Wildcat (with Wildcat Heir being very promising), Forestry and Storm Boot. The second dam of General Quarters is by Danzig, and this strain would be worth duplicating via Chief’s Crown (sire of Concerto, grandsire of Bellamy Road), Exchange Rate, Belong to Me, Polish Numbers, Honor Grades, Langfuhr, Lost Soldier, War Chant and War Front (bred on a reverse cross to the dam of General Quarters). El Prado – sire of Medaglia d’Oro and Kitten’s Joy – might work well here too.

From the Halo line Sky Mesa has graded stakes winner out of a mare by Devil’s Bag, a son of Halo. Devil’s Bag is sire of Devil His Due and Diablo. Devil’s Bag is a brother to Saint Ballado, the sire of Sweethsouthernsaint, Captain Bodgit, Straight Man, Yankee Victor, Saint Liam and Flame Thrower. The Halo strain might also brought in through Halo’s Image, Jolie’s Halo and More Than Ready (by Southern Halo, who is from the same family as General Quarters).

Sky Mesa is sire of a stakes winner out of a mare by Mt Livermore, who looks promising here, and could be brought in through Housebuster, Orientate and Peaks and Valleys). There are also Sky Mesa stakes winners out of mares by Broad Brush (sire of Concern and Include), Silver Charm, and Pleasant Colony (sire of Pleasantly Perfect and Pleasant Tap). It might also be worth trying mares by Holy Bull and his son, Macho Uno, and Caro, through Cozzene/Alphabet Soup, With Approval and In Excess/Indian Charlie.
