Strong Contender Pedigree Analysis by Alan Porter

Alan Porter - A multiple graded stakes winner and grade one performer, Strong Contender offers a quality pedigree which is completely free of Northern Dancer, Mr. Prospector and Seattle Slew.

Maria’s Mon has already sired four graded winners out of Northern Dancer line mares. This includes Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Monarchos who is out of a Dixieland Band mare from the family of Strong Contender’s broodmare sire, Dynaformer. Strong Contender should also work well with mares by Dixieland Band’s sons, such as Dixie Union, Dixie Brass and Chimes Band. Maria’s Mon has graded winners out of mares by Storm Bird and his son Storm Cat. Mares by Storm Cat sons bred on a Storm Cat/Graustark cross, such as Mountain Cat and Tabasco Cat, and the dam of the Maria’s Mon stakes winner out of a Storm Cat mare has a dam bred on a Storm Cat/Mr. Prospector cross, which suggests Tale of the Cat, Storm Boot and Storm Creek. Forestry could also work well. It could also be worth considering Storm Bird’s son, Summer Squall. There are also two Maria’s Mon line stakes winners out of Deputy Minister line mares (out of daughters of Silver Deputy and Dehere). Maria’a Mon also has stakes winner and graded placed horse out of a mare by Danzig, a strain which should go well here. Another Northern Dancer line horse who appeals here is Strawberry Road. There is also a Maria’s Mon stakes winner out of a mare by Wild Again, who is by Icecapade, a three-quarters relative to Northern Dancer. Wild Again is also sire of grade one winner Offlee Wild out of a half-sister to Dynaformer, the broodmare sire of Strong Contender.

Maria’s Mon is showing a strong affinity for the strain of Seattle Slew. He has a stakes winner out of mare by Seattle Slew himself, Champion Wait a While out of a mare by A.P. Indy, and grade one winner Latent Heat out of a mare by Capote. From the same Boldnesian male line as Seattle Slew, Maria’s Mon also has a stakes winner out of a mare by Bold Ruckus. This is a branch of the Bold Ruler line, and Maria’s Mon also has a stakes winner out of a mare by Notebook, who is from the Raja Baba branch of this male line, and who gives inbreeding to Maria’s Mon’s great-grandsire, Majestic Prince, and a stakes winner out of a mare by a son of Bold Ruler’s greatest son, Secretariat.

Both Maria’s Mon and Dynaformer have worked very well with mares carrying In Reality. Maria’s Mon has four stakes winners out of In Reality line mares, one out of a mare by In Reality himself, a graded stakes winner out of a mare by Known Fact, and two stakes winners out of mares by Valid Appeal. In Reality also appears elsewhere in the pedigree of three other Maria’s Mon graded stakes winners.

There is a stakes winner by a son of Maria’s Mon out of a mare by Mr. Prospector and graded stakes winner by Maria’s Mon out of a mare by Crafty Prospector. Other Mr. Prospector strains which might work well include Mr. Prospector/Buckpasser crosses such as Seeking the Gold, Miswaki (sire of the second dam of a Maria’s Mon graded stakes winner), Woodman and Mining (from the immediate family of Maria’s Mon’s sire, Wavering Monarch); Mr. Prospector/Ribot crosses, such as Forty Niner and Cryptoclearance; and Mr. Prospector line horses carrying Graustark, such as Cape Town, Grand Slam, Kingmambo, Cape Canaveral and Elusive Quality. Breeding Strong Contender over a mare by Unbridled’s Song would give a reverse cross to grade one winner Marylebone.

We can also note Maria’s Mon siring a grade one winner out of a mare by Cougar II, and a graded stakes winner out of a mare by Tunerup, as well as stakes winners out of a mares by Mt. Livermore and Ogygian.

It could also be worth experimenting with mares carrying Darby Creek Road and Sunshine Forever (very close relatives to Dynaformer, the broodmare sire of Strong Contender). Strong Contender has the genetic relatives Majestic Light and His Majesty and any linebreeding to them should work well, as should any strains of Graustark, a brother to His Majesty.
